Exclusive Premiere: TYRRHENIAN | Variations

1 min read

As much as the mainstream media would like to ignore the independent metal scene here in India, one can’t help but wonder at the rich diversity of the Indian metal scene; especially in the past decade or so. Though metal in India started out mostly as a traditional old school fraternity, soon it sprung out & emulated almost every sub-genres & fusion genres that the Metal multiverse could offer. Therefore, many modern metal acts have emerged over recent years & the North-East region could aptly be called the new hub of modern metal movement.

One such band is TYRRHENIAN – A five-piece Progressive/Metalcore outfit hailing from Guwahati, Assam. Since its inception back in 2012, the band never had to look back as it kept on winning almost every major competition & grabbing accolades all over the region. Quite recently, they co-headlined Stormbringer XVI along with the mighty Plague Throat. As of today, we have the utmost pleasure of premiering their single ‘Variations’– a mix-match of Prog Metal’s mastery & some atmospheric ambiance.

The track initiates on a subtle note of melody & before long, it almost bursts into a heavy Djentfest accompanied by Joy’s unrelenting drumming. When asked about how the song came about, their frontman Sam Konjham said, “Calling it a one-man idea would be an unjust statement. The idea of this composition struck us way back in 2016 but has been archived since the band’s line up was not finalized. With the new  line up concluded Tyrrhenian was all set for a comeback with an entirely new sound yet holding on to the roots of  progressive metal and heavily shaped from influences such as Meshuggah, Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya  to name a few.”

Variations Single ArtworkThe song showcases a plethora of styles & influences, with their keyboardist Richard Abraham’s ambiance working as a careful watchdog to this otherwise mad & complex piece of work. Konjham goes on to say, “Songwriting process has never been much of a tight spot as everyone in the band is a proficient musician. The theme of our songs grabs influences from ‘Life’ to be precise in words. We always write about things happening around us like society and the people inhibiting duality. People having two faces.”

I guess it’s time for me to stop ranting & let you lend your ears to this monster of a single which was recorded, mixed & mastered by Sunny Lohar.
