After two years of hiatus due to the Covid pandemic, the Wacken Open Air festival is back this year, due in the first week of August 2022.
And India has already decided on its winner to represent the Indian subcontinent at this year’s edition of the global Wacken Metal Battle. Moral Putrefaction, a death metal band based out of Chennai, India, has won the Wacken Metal Battle: Indian Subcontinent edition which was held in Bengaluru a few days back.
This also means that the prestigious global competition of the festival, Wacken Metal Battle, is also back this year.
At the Rock N’ Roll Originals Presents Metal Massacre which took place at the Fandom’s Gilly Redefined in Bangalore, Moral Putrefaction battled it out with seven other bands from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. In the end, the Chennai-based death metal quartet came out victorious, providing them with the ticket to represent India at the global Wacken Metal Battle in Germany.

The band will be playing at the Wacken Metal Battle on August 3, 2023.
Moral Putrefaction is a four-piece death metal band formed in 2015. Since then, the group released a demo titled ‘Scum of the Earth’ back in April 2019. Since their inception, the band has performed in shows throughout the country and even managed to share the stage for international acts such as Immolation (USA), Psycroptic (AUS), Draconis Infernum (Singapore), Cult of Fire (Czech Republic), among others. They’re currently working on their self-titled debut album.
Wacken Open Air is one of the biggest metal and hard rock festivals in the world, which has been an annual festival happening in the village of Wacken in the north of Germany since 1990. Since the 2004 edition of the festival, they’ve also been organizing their global competition called the Wacken Metal Battle, which provides a platform to bands coming from around 40 countries around the world including India.
