Track Review: DYMBUR | Origins From Alpha

3 mins read

Many of us are still not over the chilling hangover of the yesteryear’s solid metal presence and we already have another crazy new single to drool over. ‘Origins from Alpha’ from Shillong based Progressive Experimental metal band Dymbur is now afloat on the web as a lyric video for the fans to indulge in. It is nigh understandable if some ignorant peasants happen to be oblivious of their presence, as ‘Origins from Alpha’ happens to be the third single of their career. (Spanning well over 5 years) But in their defense, this fiery band has been busy with a different ballgame altogether and have proven their worth with a tight stage presence at various competitions and events, where they have been killing it for the last few years. They even got the (well deserved ) honor of opening up for Aussie tech-death metal band Psycroptic last year in August and Veil of Maya a couple of nights ago (which happened to be vocalist Neil Lyngdoh’s last ever show with the band) in Guwahati.

The band has sprinkled a pinch of influence from progressive metalcore bands like After The Burial and Veil of Maya and has served it on a golden platter with a dash of elements from Monuments – which is undeniably a lot of lip-smacking goodness in one recipe. Getting on with the review – The track takes off from an enchanting prelude, takes a deep breath, and a split second later the tempo explodes into a carnival of mind-numbing brutality. Show any sign of weakness and you will immediately find yourself possessed by Achugra’s unforgiving drumming, which he has perfected over the years to bewitch the hapless victim’s mind in an instant. The band has maintained a perfect blend of redundancy and unique variations in their music, to produce a set-piece which is neither forgettable nor boring. The bass is crisp and punchy and sets up a bedrock for the rhythmic riffs being played at mesmerizing pace. The hair raising cinematic pauses are back and Mayson and Cornelius have left no figurative stone unturned to make it one bloody headbanger’s sanctum. Talking about the insane vocals, Neil has killed it yet again. Yes, definitely in a good way. Some rhymes seem forced and just sitting there to bridge different sections, and yet every verse cuts deep as the theme is as thought-provoking as it gets – the gist of which is not to take pride in the interim success and stay true to your even when you spread your branches out to the heavens above. Is it simply a generic one time theme or the band’s inner voice making a revelation about the moral dilemma they face? Only time will tell. While the theme won’t turn heads on its own and will definitely earn the track a few extra brownie points (yes I do have to be that guy from time to time), but it is still something you will pretend-screech/air-shred to for weeks to come. It’s nice to see that their game is a notch better than last time as they continue to experiment with their elegant panache.Neil Lyngdoh Vocalist

Talking about the video itself, it is pretty groovy for all it’s worth. Nifty animations and slick imagery fit together like pieces of a beautiful puzzle alongside the powerful lyrics at the forefront and leave the theme bare for the naked eyes to feast upon. The video was crafted by Illusive Visions (Abhishek Goswami), a young and insanely talented metal aficionado and self-taught digital artist. The lyric video invokes trance-inducing imagery, the blur and flares adding yet another layer to the beautiful theme of introspection. The frisky graphics sway with the melody of the track’s mercurial riffs making the entire experience surprisingly both exhilarating as well as soothing.

Overall I am quite impressed by the track and it is highly recommended that you give it a fair shot. I personally can’t wait to see what the future holds in store for the band, as fan-favorite vocalist Neil Lyngdoh has officially parted his way with the band due to fulltime commitment to the job. This means Dymbur is looking for a new vocalist to fill up Neil’s shoes & finish the upcoming album which should be out anytime this year. Let’s see who ends up grabbing the crowned jewel as Dymbur’s vocalist & see if he can continue the legacy left by the former vocalist.
