Track Review: Spine Shatter – This Spiteful Race

1 min read

You wake up one morning, open your Facebook news feed and come across a band by the name of Spine Shatter (facebook page). You also see that they have released a new track. What do you do? Well, you respect their band name and shatter your spine. Because that is what the song is about, sheer energy and intensity. You cannot help but groove to this Chennai based groove metal band. If this song reaches the list of any “Try Not To Headbang” Challenge, you’ll probably have a hard time restraining yourself from the madness of the track: “THIS SPITEFUL RACE”.

The song kicks off with a no-bullshit, in your face riff work accompanied with a triplet feel double bass attack that sustains throughout the intro. Well, it does not end here. You will soon be slapped with the mighty vocals of Tushar Nayak. The best part about the vocals is that, although guttural, you can still make out the lyrics, which is necessary to understand a song’s concept. And the ability to understand the lyrics helped understand the message which the song was trying to convey.

The lyrical content is very powerful. With implications of revolt, angst and frustration towards a dying nation of sorts. And it fits well with the music. The riff work is catchy and gives a distinct sound to the song. The bass could’ve been punchier but maybe that’s just the snob in me talking. All in all a brilliant song.

The artwork for the song was designed by veteran graphic designer ACID TOAD aka GAURAV BASU which shows a spectre like figure taking control of the world. Very fitting to the theme of the song. The song was also mixed and mastered by ANUPAM ROY who has earned respect for his brilliant contribution to the Indian Music Scene (especially the Metal Scene) as a Sound Engineer (Both Live and Studio). The tracks were recorded at DropLine Studios and the drums were tracked at Cornerhouse Studios.

The band premiered their track through a lyric video which I helped make. (…ahem shameless self-promotion here) And I can clearly say this is what I felt as I listened to the track (Which I did over a 100 times) in the process of preparing the lyric video. More power to you Spine Shatter. May we hope to see better, heavier and punchier music from you.
