In a massive boost to the live entertainment industry of India, the iconic Independence Rock music festival is preparing to make a comeback after almost a decade. Regarded as the country’s oldest and biggest rock and indie music festival, the Independence Rock festival has inspired and provided a platform to a slew of indie artists and bands, some of whom are the biggest names in the industry now.
Since its very first edition way back in 1986, the Independence Rock festival, or the I-Rock, as it’s more popularly known, has been the mainstay for any independent rock and metal artists/bands across the country looking to make it big. With its last edition happening in 2013, this year’s edition of the I-Rock festival will take place on November 5 and 6 in Mumbai’s Bayview Lawns of Mazgaon locality.

For almost three decades, the I-Rock has been a breeding ground for underground-thriving indie bands who later became the face of the Indian Rock scene. Bands like Parikrama, Indus Creed (then known as Rock Machine), Pentagram, Zero, Blackstratblues, and many others like them have started their journey from this holy stage once.
This year will mark the 28th edition of this legendary music festival, which will be co-organized by original founder Farhad Wadia and Hyperlink Brand Solutions, and Paytm Insider. Talking about the plan to revive this iconic festival, Farhad Wadia said, “It’s my great fortune and privilege to revive Independence rock in partnership with my dear friends Jairam, Neale, and Jaishankar at Hyperlink and give a new generation of Rock Fans the opportunity to experience the oldest running rock festival in India, also known as the Woodstock of India.”
“We tried to bring it back in 2019 and then the pandemic hit us, so it was shelved. I think this one is going to be huge,” added Wadia. It is to be noted that Hyperlink Brand Solutions founders V.G. Jairam, Neale Murray, and V.G. Jaishankar were the ones behind other memorable festivals like Mahindra Blues Festival, Johnnie Walker – The Journey, and others.
Independence Rock XXVIII takes place on November 5th and 6th at Bayview Lawns, Mazgaon in Mumbai. Registrations for the festival are open now –
