Krishanu Bora, guitarist, and songwriter of Jaipur-based metal band Winter Gate has reportedly passed away on Monday, November 1, at his residence in Assam. At the time of reporting, the exact reason behind his untimely demise is not known yet, but many of Krishanu’s friends and former collaborators have already expressed their feeling of grief and loss in social media since the news broke out.
The sudden loss of Winter Gate’s axeman, Krishanu Bora, has sent the entire metal community of India into a state of deep shock. Assembled back in 2008, the progressive death metal band from the tourist city Jaipur, Winter Gate quickly rose through the tricky ladders of the Indian metal ecosystem and made a name for themselves in the following years. In 2013, the quartet, consisting of Devashish Dutta on vocal/guitar, Mandeep Yadav on bass, and Sudeep Saxena on drums, apart from Krishanu handling the primary guitar duties, got signed under Transcending Obscurity India, a sub-label under Transcending Obscurity Records.
The following year of 2014 saw Winter Gate finally releasing their debut record, a three-track EP titled ‘Dis-Illumination’ via Transcending Obscurity India sub-label. The EP validated the band as one of the serious forces to be reckoned with, in a country otherwise oversaturated with all sorts of extreme metal variants. The record didn’t just live up to their expectations, it even managed to allure international acclaim as it yielded decent sales from all over the globe. Prior to his death, Krishanu had announced back in May of this year, that he has joined forces with Guwahati-based metal outfit Psybarite as a bass player, and were also expected to put out a new record in the coming months.

Upon his demise, Vishal J Singh of Amogh Symphony, took to social media to let out his feelings regarding the loss of the young guitarist.
Kunal Choksi, the owner of Transcending Obscurity Records, via whom Winter Gate’s only album till date ‘Dis-Illumination’ got a worldwide release, also took to social media to express his thoughts and memories of the late musician.
Former vocalist of metal band Undying Inc, Shashank Bhatnagar, who’s also the current frontman of alt-rock outfit Soul Inclination, wrote, “Indian Metal lost another… I hope you find your peace at the gates above. Rest well, Krishanu.”
