It’s not every day that one gets to come across a hot new band straight out of the oven, with its debut offering coming off as delicious as the first aroma of a roasted turkey being served on the dinner table. Coordinates, a newly formed four-piece progressive rock group, hailing from different parts of Northern India, are just about as delicious and mouth-watering as the aforementioned aromatic roasted turkey! And their recently released single ‘Alive’ does enough to seduce the listeners towards its alluring atmospheric soundscape.

The project is a brainchild of guitarists Yash Sharma and Surbhit Singh, which finally became a fully-fledged quartet once vocalist Kamaljit Singha and drummer Rishabh Kapoor came on board. Though heavily drawing from modern prog rockers like Skyharbor, Dead Letter Circus, and Tesseract, and merging them with lush ambience-inducing post-rock-laden layers, Coordinates does manage to strike a balance between those stylistically divorced influences. Especially Kamaljit’s soaring high-pitched melodies cut right through the rich canvas decorated by the guitar parts without breaking any sweat. The cascading vocal notes swim across the complex rhythm of the track in such an effortless manner, supported by the near immaculate drumming, that it made the composition an ethereally immersive experience.

The lacing of the trickling yet simple guitar solo made the sonic voyage through the celestial soundscape even more intricate, somewhat reminiscent of God Is An Astronaut. And if it’s still too much ambient worship for you, just wait for the concluding 40 seconds, as they burst into a foray of breakdown reeking of some of metalcore’s glorious moments. Kamaljit steered this part like an ace with this tremendously controlled high-intensity scream, hitting every hook of this riff with a fistful punch.

A lot of the credit goes to the Italian producer Simone Pietroforte, for mixing & mastering this entire track and making it a cohesive output. Lyrically, the song talks about the emotion of reliance, expectations, and one’s constant need for endearment. It talks about how, when vulnerable, humans tend to seek motivation far and wide but within themselves. Overall, ‘Alive’ is an aural turn-on for modern prog admirers and ambient worshippers looking for eargasmic sounds.
