It’s pretty difficult for any band to maintain its consistency and flavour when half of its members suddenly call it quits, that too citing “creative differences”. But New Delhi-based metallers Undying Inc is here to prove you wrong once again, as they keep on getting better with each new release, the latest being the single ‘Open Source Degenerate’, which was released last month.

Right from the start, ‘Open Source Degenerate’ minces no words as guitarist Biswarup Gupta’s frenetic riff-work paves the way for the song to set its groove. Technically speaking, this song has all the elements in just about the right places that make Undying Inc click, albeit not sounding repetitive in their catalogue. Vocalist Sunneith Revankar (ex-Bhayanak Maut, The Silent Offensive) tears through the canvas of dissonant and chaotic rhythm sections quite effortlessly without breaking any sweat. And the cherry on top would be the majestic breakdown right at the mid-section of the track that is sure to make your fist clench and thump hard.

What’s even more impressive is the drum work in this composition which totally fits with the mood of the song. But truth be told, Jerry Nelson Ranee (ex-Aberrant, The Silent Offensive) has done justice to this track with his tightly knit syncopated beats. Together with bassist Ezra Helios, the foundation of the song was laid firm enough for everything else to work immaculately throughout the daunting composition.

In all honesty, ‘Open Source Degenerate’ is a perfect follow-up to their last single ‘Decimate’ which was released in 2020. The composition is more intricate and intense this time, and the mixing is also quite distinct compared to its last two predecessors (‘Glock’ and ‘Decimate’); thanks to the mixing and mastering prowess of sound engineer Justin Paul Hill.

Undying Inc have always showcased a myriad of influences in their music, be it tech-death, progressive, or even metalcore. And this single is no exception to that, which makes the wait for their upcoming highly-anticipated album (their last being 2014’s Ironclad EP) all the more anxious.
